Data and maps here are provided primarily by the Mapping Section, part of the NCDOT State Road Managment Unit.
- The Mapping Section is committed to providing superior quality information and mapping of the existing state maintained system of highways and computer generated images of proposed projects for the NC Department of Transportation.
- We acknowledge the immense responsibility to produce and maintain these products and services as accurately as possible because of their value in the planning, funding, construction, and maintenance of transportation facilities in North Carolina.
- We understand the importance of our role in helping provide an efficient and cost effective transportation system for the citizens of N.C. and dedicate ourselves to the accurate and timely delivery of the services that we provide toward that effort.
- The PDFs on this webpage will require the current version of Adobe Reader. Download the current version from the Adobe website.
These county maps identify routes that make up the North Carolina Department of Transportation State Highway System. These routes are maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and consist of Primary and Secondary roads.
The SRMU Mapping Section is beginning the process of moving its mapping operation from the MicroStation platform to the ESRI Arc platform. This change is in an effort to streamline data maintenance and to utilize the best data available. The County Maintenance Map Series will be the initial product moved to Arc. Other products will follow after the county maps are completed. Initial estimates to complete the migration of the county maps are around 7+ months. Please check this web site periodically for updates on the completion schedule and when the newly formatted county maps will be available online. During this transformation period, the SRMU Mapping Section will not be updating any map products available on our website, and the availability of staff to provide customer support will be very limited. We would like to thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to move in a direction that will better serve the public and support NCDOT’s over all Goals.

Leveling Resources
These Microstation-J files are provided by the State Road Maintenance Unit Mapping Section. They are available in meters or feet, depending on your application. The metric version of the designfiles should have all data available for all counties, including plot elements such as legends, sheet cells, titles, etc. The metric designfiles also show greater detail (on the 4X insets) that do not get converted to the designfiles stored as stateplane feet. We are providing this data with no guarantee regarding the accuracy or completeness of the data. You should examine the Leveling Chart to understand the structure of the County Maps.
Convert Metric to English
Copy the seed file (SRMU_MS_ENGLISH_seed.dgn) to your local drive. Download a copy of the metric lin file that you need to your local drive with the seed file. Open the seed file; reference the metric lin from your local drive. In the reference dialog box under file, merge into master. This will make the conversion to English.

Crash Data
For more information about transportation safety performance measures and how NCDOT tracks this information, head over to the Performance Dashboard.
The Transportation Mobility and Safety Division and the NCDOT Executive Committee for Highway Safety have collaborated with the NCDOT - State Road Management Unit - Mapping Section to develop and produce County Crash Distribution Profile Maps for North Carolina. These visual representations of the distribution and frequency of the most current five (5) years of reported 1) Fatal, 2) Fatal + A injury, and 3) Total Crashes provide a user friendly tool for the public, NCDOT’s safety partners and the department’s leadership team.
This collection of high level summary maps effectively displays regions that are experiencing higher frequencies of target type crashes. The three series of maps (All Vehicles, Motorcycle, and Large Truck) provide a simple safety performance overview and support data-driven efforts to identify specific regions, corridors, and specific intersections.
