NC 12 Recovery Efforts Update 12/11/13

NCDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have advertised the contract for interested contractors to bid on the beach nourishment project along N.C. 12 at Rodanthe.

Bids are due Jan. 3 to the Army Corps, and they are expected to award a contract soon after that deadline. The project is scheduled to be complete by May.

A series of storms, including Hurricane Sandy last fall, resulted in severe beach erosion along N.C. 12 at the S-Curves. NCDOT acquired $20.8 million in Hurricane Sandy emergency response funding from the Federal Highway Administration to pay for the beach nourishment.

The Army Corps has designed the Beach Nourishment Project to last about three years until a bridge is built as a long-term solution to secure this section of highway.
