Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative
The NCDOT Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Transportation Planning Branch created an annual matching grant program the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative to encourage municipalities to develop comprehensive bicycle plans and pedestrian plans. This program was initiated in January 2004 and is currently administered through NCDOT-DBPT. Details about how to apply for a future grant and a more complete overview about this grant program can be found online at the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative Web site. For questions contact, Bob Mosher at rmosher@ncdot.gov, (919) 807-0773. Sixteen new municipalities were recently awarded grants for the 2008 cycle for a total of $391,750 funds allocated (see press release). Forty municipalities applied for the 2008 grants. Since 2004, 80 municipalities have been awarded a planning grant out of 214 total applicants. To date, a total of $1,952,968 has been allocated to these 80 municipalities through this grant program. Funding for the program comes from an allocation first approved by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2003 in addition to federal funds earmarked specifically for bicycle and pedestrian planning through the Department’s Transportation Planning Branch.
