The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded its first Safe Routes to School program funds with nearly $1.6 million going to 11 municipalities and local agencies. The funding is for bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects and safety programs for local schools.

The awards included $1.46 million for six demonstration grants, which can be used to build and repair sidewalks, improve intersections and install bicycle lanes around schools, and $135,450 for five non-infrastructure grants to fund activities such as pedestrian and bicycle safety classes, crossing guard and student safety patrol training, electronic equipment to help enforce traffic laws in school zones and other initiatives that encourage students to walk and bicycle to school.

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2007
"Walk and Roll" to School

Congratulations to this year’s Walk & Roll to School Contest winner South Lexington School, a public pre-K through grade 3 school in Lexington. South Lexington School recorded the most miles walked or bike, per student, for an individual school, through the duration of the month-long contest. The contest open to all schools grades K-8, encourages students to get up, get out and get moving. Ms. Green's Kindergarten class, also from South Lexington, logged 11.7 miles per student and won the award for the most miles per student in an individual class. Congratulations again.
