NCDOT has several projects along NC 12 in the Outer Banks. This page is intended to serve as the hub for information on each project and the latest news concerning our efforts to ensure that the Outer Banks remains accessible to all travelers throughout the length of NC 12.
Following a settlement agreement approved in June 2015, lawsuits were officially dropped Aug. 14, 2015, allowing NCDOT to proceed with the replacement of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet with a bridge parallel to the existing bridge. NCDOT will also study long-term options for N.C. 12 south of the Bonner Bridge. A study must be completed within a year and a half of lawsuit dismissals.
A map displaying the three separate projects included in the overall Bonner Bridge replacement project was developed by NCDOT. It shows the location of the new Bonner Bridge, the Pea Island study area and the proposed long-term bridge project at Rodanthe. The preferred design option for the Rodanthe project was presented to the merger team on June 17 and is currently awaiting final approval.
