Historic Preservation

Objective

Projects in this category should enhance the transportation experience by improving the ability of the public to appreciate the significance of a historic property through a contemporary transportation-related function. All historic preservation projects must clearly demonstrate a contemporary relationship to the surface transportation system. Furthermore, all proposed projects must either be listed on, or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic facilities and sites can be "restored" by returning the property to a condition that makes a contemporary use possible, while preserving the significant historic features of the property.

Examples of Uses

Allowable Unallowable
  • Historic preservation of a transportation-related historic property
  • Historic preservation of a non-transportation related district, site or structure that has no contemporary relationship to the surface transportation system
  • Historic preservation of a non-transportation-related historic property, while creating a contemporary transportation use
  • Replication/duplication of a historic building, structure, or site
  • Costs associated with identification, evaluation, recordation, documentation, protection, rehabilitation, interpretation, restoration, and stabilization of a historic district, site, or structure
  • Restoration of private facilities for a non-public use
  • Costs of contemporary upgrades of water, electric, heating, air conditioning, etc. when appropriate to make a building viable for continued public use
  • Installation of improvements designed for a non-transportation use or tenant, such as office partitions, furniture, display cases, etc.
  •
  • Research necessary to make a site eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
