The work covered by this section consists of miscellaneous work including but not limited to attaching overlays, signs, and logos to existing signs and supports; repositioning existing signs on existing supports; erecting existing signs on new supports; erecting logos on U-channel posts; and furnishing and erecting sign supports with the necessary anchorage on barriers and retaining walls.
All work shall be done in accordance with the requirements of the plans and the provisions of these specifications.
A sign or sign assembly which consists of more than one sign panel will be considered one sign.
The Contractor shall furnish all materials necessary to complete the work unless otherwise provided in the plans or specifications. All materials furnished by the Contractor shall be new materials.
The provisions of Section 900 will be applicable to all work covered by this section.
All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:

Materials shall not be drilled in the field except where permitted by the specifications or the Engineer. Any hole drilled in galvanized steel shall be painted with 2 coats of zinc-rich paint.
(A) Attach Overlays to _________ Sign:
The Contractor shall attach overlays to designated existing ground-mounted or overhead signs as required by the plans.
The Contractor shall remove and dispose of all existing demountable legends, borders, and overlays prior to attaching new overlays. The Contractor may employ any method of removal he chooses, provided it does not damage the existing sign or the attached overlay. The Contractor shall perform such minor repairs to existing signs as necessary prior to the attachment of overlays to ensure a finished sign face that is completely flat.
The Contractor shall field-drill 5/32 inch holes in both the overlay and the existing sign simultaneously, according to the rivet spacing requirements shown in the plans. The proposed overlays shall be attached with 1/8 inch diameter aluminum rivets of the "pull-through" type. Sufficient care shall be exercised in attaching the overlays to ensure that the finished sign face is completely flat and without any ripples and/or buckles.
(B) Erect Existing Sign on New Supports:
The existing signs shall be removed from their existing locations and erected immediately on the new supports.
New holes may be drilled in the horizontal stringers of the sign if the existing holes cannot be utilized.
(C) Erect Existing Sign on New U-Channel Posts:
The Contractor shall remove existing signs from their existing supports and relocate them on new U-channel posts as required by the plans.
(D) Reposition Existing Sign on Overhead Sign Assembly:
The Contractor shall reposition existing signs on existing overhead sign assemblies as required by the plans. Associated lighting systems and secondary signs shall be repositioned along with the sign.
New holes may be required to be drilled in the existing vertical attachment members, in order to maintain a minimum clearance of 17 feet to the roadway surface at the new location on the structure. No other field drilling will be allowed.
Conduit shall be adjusted as necessary, and junction boxes and conduits shall be relocated as required.
(E) Attach New Overhead Sign to Existing Overhead Sign Assembly:
The Contractor shall attach new overhead signs on existing overhead sign assemblies, as required by the plans.
The Contractor shall design and furnish all new structural members and mounting hardware necessary to erect the new signs. The Contractor shall prepare and submit to the Engineer for approval complete shop drawings and design computations for the bracing and accessory hardware required to attach the sign to the existing overhead sign assembly, which includes lighting support brackets and maintenance walkways unless specified otherwise. Such design shall be in accordance with the Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, as published by AASHTO, and with the line drawings and wind speed shown in the plans.
The shop drawings shall be submitted prior to ordering the signs. Upon request, the Engineer will provide the Contractor with copies of the shop drawings for the existing overhead sign assemblies.
(F) Attach New Sign Above Existing Overhead Sign:
The Contractor shall attach a new sign above a designated existing overhead sign, in accordance with the Roadway Standard Drawings, as designated on the plans. The Contractor shall furnish all new structural members and mounting hardware necessary to erect the new sign.
(G) Attach Logo to Mainline Sign:
All logos will be made available for pick up by the Contractor at the Division Traffic Services' sign shop. The Contractor shall attach logos to the mainline signs with ten 1/8-inch diameter rivets of the "pull through" type. The Contractor shall drill 5/32-inch holes in the background signs to match those in the logos for attaching the logos to the background signs. Logo placements shall be as shown on the plans.
(H) Attach Logo to Ramp Sign:
All logos will be made available for pick up by the Contractor at the Division Traffic Services' sign shop. The Contractor shall attach logos to the ramp signs with four 1/8-inch diameter rivets of the "pull through" type. The Contractor shall drill 5/32-inch holes in the background signs to match those in the logos for attaching the logos to the background signs. Logo placements are to be as shown on the plans.
(I) Erect Logo on U-Channel Post:
All logos will be made available for pick up by the Contractor at the Division Traffic Services' sign shop. The Contractor shall erect logos on U-channel posts in accordance with Type F Sign details shown in the plans.
(J) Barrier Sign Support Assembly:
The Contractor shall fabricate, furnish, and attach brackets and U-channel posts to the median or shoulder barrier for the erection of Type E Signs, Type F Signs, or milemarkers as required by the plans.
(K) Retaining Wall Sign Support and Anchorage:
The Contractor shall fabricate, furnish, and attach a retaining wall sign support and anchorage for the erection of Type E Signs on a retaining wall as required by the plans.
(A) Attach Overlays to _____ Sign:
The quantity of attach overlays to _____ sign to be paid for will be the actual number of signs on which the required overlays have been attached and accepted. Payment will be on a "per sign" basis, without regard to the number or size of the overlays.
(B) Erect Existing Sign on New Supports:
The quantity of erect existing sign on new supports to be paid for will be the actual number of existing signs which have been erected on new supports and accepted.
(C) Erect Existing Sign on New U-Channel Posts:
The quantity of erect existing sign on new U-channel posts to be paid for will be the actual number of existing signs which have been erected on new U-channel posts and accepted.
(D) Reposition Existing Sign on Overhead Sign Assembly:
The quantity of reposition existing sign on overhead sign assembly to be paid for will be the actual number of existing signs which have been repositioned on overhead sign assemblies and accepted.
(E) Attach New Overhead Sign to Existing Overhead Sign Assembly:
The quantity of attach new overhead sign to existing overhead sign assembly to be paid for will be the actual number of new signs which have been attached to existing overhead sign assemblies and accepted.
(F) Attach New Sign Above Existing Overhead Sign:
The quantity of attach new sign above existing overhead sign to be paid for will be the actual number of new signs which have been attached above existing overhead signs and accepted.
(G) Attach Logo to Mainline Sign:
The quantity of attach logo to mainline sign to be paid for will be the actual number of logos which have been attached to mainline signs and accepted.
(H) Attach Logo to Ramp Sign:
The quantity of attach logo to ramp sign to be paid for will be the actual number of logos which have been attached to ramp signs and accepted.
(I) Erect Logo on U-Channel Post:
The quantity of erect logo on U-channel post to be paid for will be the actual number of logos which have been erected on U-channel posts and accepted.
(J) Barrier Sign Support Assembly:
The quantity of barrier sign support assembly to be paid for will be the actual number of barrier sign support assemblies which have been furnished and attached to median or shoulder barrier and accepted.
(K) Retaining Wall Sign Support and Anchorage:
The quantity of retaining wall sign support and anchorage to be paid for will be the actual number of retaining wall sign support and anchorages which have been furnished and attached to retaining walls and accepted.
(A) Attach Overlays to _____ Sign:
The quantity of attach overlays to _____ sign, measured as provided in Subarticle 9084(A) will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Attach Overlays to _____ Sign".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to removing and disposing of existing overlays, legends, shields, and borders; transporting the overlay from the place of fabrication; unloading and storing the overlay; field-drilling rivet holes in the overlay and in the existing sign; attachment of the overlay to the existing sign; riveting; and cleaning and repairing of damages to existing signs.
(B) Erect Existing Sign on New Supports:
The quantity of erect existing sign on new supports, measured as provided in Subarticle 9084(B), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Erect Existing Sign on New Supports".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to removing existing signs, transporting the signs, erecting the signs on new supports, drilling holes, and providing all new mounting hardware.
(C) Erect Existing Sign on New U-Channel Posts:
The quantity of erect existing sign on new U-channel posts, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(C), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Erect Existing Sign on New U-Channel Posts".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to removing existing signs, erecting the signs on new supports, and providing all new mounting hardware.
(D) Reposition Existing Sign on Overhead Sign Assembly:
The quantity of reposition existing sign on overhead sign assembly, measured as provided in Subarticle 9084(D), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Reposition Existing Sign on Overhead Sign Assembly".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to demounting signs and lighting systems, moving signs and lighting systems, re-attaching signs and lighting systems, furnishing new sign and lighting mounting hardware, drilling holes, and furnishing and installing all new electrical materials.
(E) Attach New Overhead Sign to Existing Overhead Sign Assembly:
The quantity of attach new overhead sign to existing overhead sign assembly, measured as provided in Subarticle 9084(E), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Attach New Overhead Sign to Existing Overhead Sign Assembly".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to transporting the signs from the place of fabrication, unloading the signs and storing them as necessary, designing and providing structural members and mounting hardware, and erecting the signs.
(F) Attach New Sign Above Existing Overhead Sign:
The quantity of attach new sign above existing overhead sign, measured as provided in Subarticle 9084(F), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Attach New Sign Above Existing Overhead Sign".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to transporting the signs from the place of fabrication, unloading the signs and storing them as necessary, furnishing structural members and mounting hardware, and attaching the sign to the existing overhead sign.
(G) Attach Logo to Mainline Sign:
The quantity of attach logo to mainline sign, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(G), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Attach Logo to Mainline Sign".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to transporting the logos, unloading the logos and storing them as necessary, drilling holes, and attaching logos with rivets.
(H) Attach Logo to Ramp Sign:
The quantity of attach logo to ramp sign, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(H), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Attach Logo to Ramp Sign".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to transporting the logos, unloading the logos and storing them as necessary, drilling holes, and attaching logos with rivets.
(I) Erect Logo on U-Channel Post:
The quantity of erect logo on U-channel post, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(I), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Erect Logo on U-Channel Post".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to transporting the logos, unloading the logos and storing them as necessary, drilling holes, and attaching the logo.
(J) Barrier Sign Support Assembly:
The quantity of barrier sign support assembly, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(J), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Barrier Sign Support Assembly".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to fabricating, furnishing, and attaching the support assembly, and repairing any damage to the concrete barrier.
(K) Retaining Wall Sign Support and Anchorage:
The quantity of retaining wall sign support and anchorage, measured as provided for in Subarticle 9084(K), will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Retaining Wall Sign support and Anchorage".
Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work necessary to complete this pay item including but not limited to fabricating, furnishing, and attaching the support assembly; and repairing any damage to the retaining wall.
