SECTION 846

CONCRETE CURB, CURB AND GUTTER,

GUTTER, SHOULDER BERM GUTTER

AND CONCRETE FLUMES

846-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of the construction of portland cement concrete curb, concrete curb and gutter, concrete noses, and concrete gutter; shoulder berm gutter and concrete flumes in accordance with the requirements shown on the plans and the provisions of these specifications.

846-2 MATERIALS.

All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:

Portland cement concrete Section 1000

Curing agents Section 1026

Joint fillers Article 1028-1

Joint sealers Article 1028-2

846-3 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS.

(A) General:

Concrete shall be constructed in accordance with Section 825, except as otherwise provided herein. Class B concrete shall be used. Prior to placing forms the base or subgrade shall have been compacted to the degree required by the applicable section of these specifications.

The Contractor shall remove and dispose of existing temporary slope drains prior to beginning installation of concrete flumes.

At the Contractor's option, he may elect to substitute 4" of Bituminous (See Standard Special Provisions) Concrete base Course, Type HB or 4" of Class "B" or higher strength concrete for the 6" aggregate base. Should the Contractor elect to use the concrete as a base, the base shall be constructed independently of the flume, curb and apron.

(B) Forms:

Forms shall be of such section and design that they will adequately support the concrete and any construction equipment used to construct the work. Straight forms shall be within a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 10 feet from a true line horizontally and vertically. Form pins shall be metal and shall be capable of holding the forms rigidly in place during construction operations. The form sections shall be connected by locking joint which shall keep the forms free from vertical and horizontal movement. All forms shall have been approved by the Engineer before concrete is placed.

When the concrete will be machine placed the surface over which the machine will be operated shall have been approved by the Engineer before placing concrete.

(C) Finishing:

The concrete shall be given a light broom finish with brush marks parallel to the curb line or gutter line.

(D) Joints:

Joints shall be located as shown on the plans except as otherwise provided herein. Joint spacing shall not be less than 5 feet. Where concrete is placed adjacent to portland cement concrete pavement, the joints shall be located so as to line up with the joints in the concrete pavement.

Grooved contraction joints shall be formed by the use of templates or by other approved methods. Where such joints are not formed by templates, the groove shall be of the depth shown on the plans.

Grooved butt joints shall be placed between the work and adjacent pavement except where expansion joints are required by the plans. The groove shall be formed in the same manner required by Subarticle 82510(B) for grooved contraction joints, and shall be sealed.

All joints shall be sealed except for joints in curb sections not having an integral gutter. In curb and gutter the joint sealer shall not be poured above the top surface of the gutter. Joints in gutter shall be filled with joint sealer to the top surface of the gutter. Joints shall be sealed before backfilling or other adjacent operations are performed.

(E) Surface Tolerances:

The finished surface shall not vary from a straight line by more than 1/4 inch when checked longitudinally with a 10 foot straightedge.

(F) Backfilling:

No earth backfill or pavement shall be placed adjacent to the curb, curb and gutter, gutter, shoulder berm gutter or flumes until at least 3 curing days as defined in Article 8259 have elapsed. However, earth backfill shall be placed no later than 4 calendar days after the completion of this 3 curing day time period unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. The quantity and degree of compaction of the backfill shall be satisfactory to the Engineer.

(G) Opening to Traffic:

Vehicles may be permitted on the completed work after 7 curing days, as defined in Article 8259, have elapsed. When high early strength concrete is used, vehicles will be permitted on the completed work after 3 curing days have elapsed.

846-4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The quantities of curb, curb and gutter and shoulder berm gutter to be paid for will be the number of linear feet of curb, curb and gutter and shoulder berm and gutter, which have been completed and accepted. Measurements will be made along the surface of the work at the top of the curb, or at the gutter flow line where there is no curb.

The quantity of concrete noses and, and concrete flumes to be paid for will be the actual number of concrete noses and flumes which have been completed and accepted.

846-5 BASIS OF PAYMENT.

The quantities of curb, curb and gutter, gutter and shoulder berm gutter, measured as provided in Article 8464, will be paid for at the contract unit prices per linear foot for "________Inch X ________Inch Concrete Curb," "________Foot ________Inch Concrete Curb and Gutter", "____ Foot Concrete Gutter and "Shoulder Berm Gutter". Such prices and payments will be full compensation for all work of constructing curb, curb and gutter, and gutter, including but not limited to excavation and backfilling, furnishing and placing concrete including any concrete required behind curbs at nose sections, and constructing joints.

When the contract provides for the payment of concrete noses as a separate item, the quantity of concrete noses, measured as provided in Article 8464, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for Concrete Noses." Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work of constructing concrete noses, including but not limited to excavation and backfilling, furnishing and placing concrete, depressing curb as required by the plans, and constructing joints.

The quantity of concrete flumes, measured as provided in Article 8464 will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Concrete Flume". Such price and payment will be full compensation for all materials, labor, equipment, tools, removing and disposing of the temporary slope drains, and all incidentals necessary to complete the work satisfactorily.

Payment will be made under:
