The Table of Contents for this section is available.
The work covered by this section consists of the construction of portland cement concrete or brick masonry endwalls, either plain or reinforced, in accordance with the requirements shown on the plans and the provisions of these specifications.
All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:
Portland cement concrete Section 1000
Curing agents Section 1026
Brick Article 1040-1
Mortar Article 1040-8
Steel bar reinforcement Article 1070-2
Subdrain fine aggregate Article 1044-1
Stone, No 78M Section 1005
Precast Concrete Units Section 1077
Select Material Section 1016
(A) Foundation:
No concrete or masonry shall be placed until the foundation has been approved by the Engineer.
Excavation shall be made true to lines and dimensions so that footings will not have any rounded or undercut corners and edges. All rock and other hard foundation material shall be cleaned of all loose material, and cut to a firm surface, either reasonably level or stepped as directed by the Engineer.
Where the foundation material is found to be of poor supporting value or of rock, the Engineer may make minor adjustments in the location of the structure to provide a more suitable foundation. Where this is not practical, the foundation shall be conditioned by removing the existing foundation material by undercutting to the depth as directed by the Engineer and backfilling with a select material as classified in Section 1016 or a suitable local material secured from unclassified excavation or borrow excavation at the nearest accessible location along the project, or foundation conditioning material consisting of crushed stone or gravel or a combination of sand and crushed stone or gravel approved by the Engineer as being suitable for the purpose intended. The selection of the type of backfill material to be used for foundation conditioning will be made by the Engineer.
(B) Concrete and Masonry:
Concrete shall be constructed in accordance with Section 825 and shall be given an ordinary surface finish. Brick masonry shall be constructed in accordance with Sections 830 and 832. Furnishing and placing reinforcing steel shall be in accordance with Section 425.
The class of concrete shall be as indicated on the plans.
Where necessary to fit field conditions, the dimensions of the structure and footings shall be varied as directed by the Engineer.
Endwalls shall be constructed in accordance with the details in the plans.
Endwalls shall be constructed on the end of a full joint of pipe.
(C) Backfill:
After the endwall has been completed, and all forms have been removed, the excavation shall be backfilled with approved material. The shape and degree of compaction of the backfill shall be satisfactory to the Engineer. Backfilling shall not be done until the concrete or brick masonry has cured for at least 7 curing days, unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer. However, backfill shall be placed no later than 4 calendar days after the completion of this 7 day time period. A curing day shall be as defined in Article 8259 for concrete or Article 8305 for brick masonry.
(A) Concrete:
The quantity of concrete to be paid for will be the number of cubic yards of concrete of each class which has been incorporated into the completed and accepted concrete endwalls. The number of cubic yards of concrete will be computed from the dimensions shown on the plans or from revised dimensions authorized by the Engineer.
(B) Brick Masonry:
The quantity of brick masonry to be paid for will be the number of cubic yards of brick masonry which has been incorporated into the completed and accepted brick endwalls, except that where brick masonry has been constructed from brick which is larger than standard size the computed quantities will be based on the wall thickness shown on the plans. Wherever a brick masonry endwall has a concrete footing, the quantity of concrete in the footing will be measured and included in the quantity of brick masonry and is to be paid for as brick masonry. The number of cubic yards of brick masonry will be computed from the dimensions shown on the plans or revised dimensions authorized by the Engineer.
(C) Reinforcing Steel:
The quantity of reinforcing steel is to be paid for will be the number of pounds of steel, as indicated on the plans or computed from revised dimensions authorized by the Engineer, which are necessary to construct reinforced brick masonry endwalls and Class A concrete endwalls. No measurement will be made of any reinforcing steel used in other concrete or brick endwalls as such reinforcing steel will be considered incidental to the work.
(A) Concrete:
The quantity of concrete, measured as provided in Subarticle 8384(A), will be paid for at the contract unit price per cubic yard for "Concrete Endwalls, Class ________Concrete."
(B) Brick Masonry:
The quantity of brick masonry endwalls, measured as provided in Subarticle 8384(B), will be paid for at the contract unit price per cubic yard for "Brick Masonry Endwalls."
(C) Reinforcing Steel:
The quantity of reinforcing steel, measured as provided in Subarticle 8384(C), will be paid for at the contract unit price per pound for "Reinforcing Steel, Endwalls".
(D) Foundation Conditioning:
Foundation conditioning will be paid for as provided in Subarticles 3009(A) and 3009(E).
(E) Compensation:
The above prices and payments will be full compensation for all work covered by this section, including but not limited to excavation, hauling, disposal of materials, furnishing and placing backfill materials, subsurface drainage, concrete, brick masonry, mortar, grout, and furnishing and placing reinforcing steel.
(F) Pay Items:
Payment will be made under:
Concrete Endwalls, Class___________Concrete Cubic Yard
Brick Masonry Endwalls Cubic Yard
Reinforced Brick Masonry Endwalls Cubic Yard
Reinforcing Steel, Endwalls Pound
