This section consists of the general requirements for all reinforced brick masonry construction. The provisions of Sections 464 and 838 will prevail over any conflicting provisions of this section.
Concrete footings and all other concrete elements of the structure shall be constructed in accordance with Section 825. Reinforcement shall be furnished and placed as shown on the plans and in accordance with the provisions of Section 425. Class A concrete shall be used for footings unless otherwise indicated on the plans. Class M concrete shall be used in reinforcement cavities. Class M concrete shall not be vibrated but shall be rodded to provide a dense, homogeneous concrete.
Mortar meeting the requirements of Article 10408 shall be machine mixed for not less than 1 1/2 minutes. Any mortar which has developed initial set or which has lost plasticity will be rejected and shall be removed and disposed of by the Contractor.
Brick shall be dampened when necessary to reduce the rate of absorption. The type of bond shall be as called for on the plans. Reinforced brick masonry shall be built plumb and true to the required dimensions.
Brick shall be laid with completely filled mortar joints. Mortar joints shall be not more than 1/2 inch no less than 1/4 inch thick except where otherwise indicated on the plans. Joints exposed in all surfaces that will remain exposed after backfill shall be finished with a concave jointer. All other joints shall be flush cut.
No spalls or bats shall be used for shaping around irregular openings or when unavoidable to finish out a course in which case a full brick shall be placed at the corner and the bat placed in the interior of the course.
Exposed exterior surfaces which will not be backfilled shall be cleaned of spilled mortar.

The provisions of Article 8305 will be applicable to protection from cold weather.
There will be no direct payment for the work covered by this section.
Payment at the contract unit prices for the various items covered
by those sections of the specifications directly applicable to
the work being constructed will be full compensation for all work
covered by this section.
