The Table of Contents for this section is available.
The work covered by this section consists of the construction of shoulder drains and furnishing and installing painted pavement markers and vertical markers to located concrete pads for the drains in accordance with the requirements of the plans and the provisions of these specifications.
All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:
Shoulder drain aggregate, No. 57 stone Section 1005
Concrete pipe and fittings Article 1044-3
Corrugated steel pipe and fittings Article 1044-4
Polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC) pipe Article 1044-5
Corrugated plastic pipe and fittings Article 1044-6
___ Inch Outlet Pipe Article 1044-7
Shoulder drain filter fabric (Type 1 fabric) Section 1056

Pavement Marker Paint Section 1087
Steel Marker Article 1072-4
Steel Marker Paint Article 1080-14
Shoulder drain pipe and fittings may be, at the option of the Contractor, either concrete, corrugated steel, or corrugated plastic.
The trench shall be excavated to the width, depth, lines, and grades shown on the plans unless otherwise directed by the Engineer.
Filter fabric shall be installed in such a manner that all splice joints are provided with a minimum overlap of 2 feet. The overlap of the closure at the top of the trench shall be at least 6 inches and secured with mechanical ties. Where outlet pipe passes through the fabric, a separate piece of fabric shall be wrapped around the outlet pipe, flared against the side of the filled drain, and secured with anchor pins.
Field splices of filter fabric shall be anchored with anchor pins to ensure that required overlap is maintained.
At the time of installation, the fabric will be rejected if it has defects, rips, holes, flaws, deterioration, or damage incurred during manufacture, transportation, or storage.
Aggregate placement operations and the pipe installation shall be done as to prevent damage to the filter fabric. Damaged sections of filter fabric shall be replaced at no cost to the Department.
Corrugated steel pipe sections shall be firmly joined together by coupling bands or with a smooth sleeve type coupler, or other approved mechanical methods which will firmly join the sections together.
When the pipe perforations are not distributed uniformly over the circumference of the pipe, the pipe shall be laid as provided in this paragraph. Perforated pipe shall be laid with the perforated segments of the pipe down except that when plain pipe is called for by the plans, the perforations shall be turned up or non-perforated pipe shall be used.
Outlet pipe shall meet the requirements of Article 10447. The SCH40 pipe and fittings shall be solvent cemented together. The HDPE pipe shall be connected with watertight neoprene connectors which are suitable for gravity flow conditions. All pipe fittings shall be approved by the Engineer prior to delivery. The open end of all outlet pipes shall be protected with a galvanized rodent screen as shown in plans or as approved by the Engineer.
Installation of outlet fittings and outlet pipes shall be concurrent with the installation of the aggregate shoulder drains. Positive drainage shall be established within 72 hours of beginning trenching for installation of given section of aggregate shoulder drain. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in the Engineer restricting installation of additional sections of aggregate shoulder drain until such time as the Contractor completes appropriate outlet installations.
The aggregate shall be compacted to a degree acceptable to the Engineer by the use of a vibratory compactor before making the filter fabric closure at the top of the trench.
After the pipe has been laid, the backfill material shall be carefully placed so that the pipe will not be disturbed by the backfilling operation. All earth backfill material shall be firmly tamped.
The shoulder drains shall be connected to existing drainage structures or to concrete pads at the outlet end of the subdrain. The concrete pad shall be constructed in accordance with Section 825 and shall be given an ordinary surface finish. Class B concrete shall be used.
Markers shall be constructed in accordance with the plans and shall be used at all concrete pads.
(A) Shoulder Drain:
The quantity of shoulder drain to be paid for will be the number of linear feet of shoulder drain which has been completed and accepted, measured to the nearest foot along the centerline of the completed shoulder drain aggregate. No measurement will be made along the outlet pipe.
(B) Pipe:
The quantity of pipe to be paid for will be the actual number of linear feet of all perforated and non-perforated pipe which has been incorporated into the completed and accepted work. Measurement will be made along the pipe installation, including fittings, to the nearest 0.1 of a foot with no deduction made for fittings.
(C) Concrete Pads:
The quantity of concrete pads to be paid for will be the actual number of pads which have been completed and accepted.
(A) Shoulder Drain:
The quantity of shoulder drain, measured as provided in Subarticle 8164(A), will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for "Shoulder Drain".
