The work covered by this section consists of the removal of an existing structure. The structure shall be removed as provided by this section unless otherwise required by the plans or special provisions.
Traffic shall be maintained over the existing structure in accordance with Division 11 unless otherwise stipulated by the plans or special provisions. The maintenance of the existing structure, if required, will be performed by State forces. The Contractor will be required to comply with the posted load limits of the existing structure.
402-2 REMOVAL OF EXISTING STRUCTURE.
(A) General:
All methods and operations used for removal of structures shall meet the approval of the Engineer. All materials shall become the property of the Contractor unless otherwise indicated on the plans or in the special provisions. Waste and debris resulting from the removal of structures shall be disposed of in accordance with Section 802.
Operations performed in connection with the removal of existing structures shall be performed in such a manner as to prevent damage to adjacent property. New construction shall be protected during blasting or other operations necessary for the removal of the existing structure.
Substructures shall, unless otherwise required by the plans or special provisions or directed by the Engineer, be removed down to the stream bottom or down to 1 foot below the natural ground surface for those portions outside of the stream. Where the substructure lies wholly or in part within an area where foundation excavation is to be performed or piles are to be driven, the substructure shall be removed as necessary to avoid interference with the construction of the proposed structure.
The Contractor shall exercise every reasonable precaution to prevent the eroding of soil and the silting of rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, other water impoundments, ground surfaces, or other property. Excavated materials shall not be deposited, nor shall earth dikes or other temporary earth structures be constructed, in rivers, streams, or impoundments or so near to such waters that they will be carried into any river, stream, or impoundment by stream flow or surface runoff. The use of equipment in any body of water shall be limited to those operations which would be impossible or impractical to perform in any other way, and shall be so controlled as to minimize any erosion or siltation resulting from its operation. The dropping of parts or components of structures into any body of water will not be permitted unless there is no other practical method of removal. The removal from the water of any part or component of a structure shall be done so as to keep any resulting siltation to a minimum.
(B) Requirements for Materials Which Remain the Property of the Department:
Materials salvaged from the structure shall be piled neatly on the right of way at locations directed by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall not use any materials, either temporarily or permanently, which have been removed from the structure unless so permitted by the plans or special provisions.
Structural materials shall be removed carefully without damage.
Explosives shall not be used to remove concrete floor slabs from steel superstructures that are to remain the property of the Department.
(C) Requirements for Partial Removal:
Partial removal shall be accurately done true to the lines indicated on the plans. Concrete shall not be removed by blasting or other methods which may cause damage to the concrete or reinforcement that will be used in the completed structure.
An iron ball or pile hammer shall not be used to remove portions of a concrete structure which is to be widened. A hoe ram may be used when approved by the Engineer. Equipment and methods used to remove portions of a concrete structure which is to be widened shall be sufficient to obtain plan lines and slopes without undue spalling at edges of the concrete.
