SECTION 1622

TEMPORARY SLOPE DRAINS

1622-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of furnishing, placing, and if directed by the Engineer, removing devices used to transport water from higher elevations to lower elevations without noticeable erosion. Temporary slope drains shall be installed at the locations shown on the plans and at the locations directed by the Engineer.

The quantity of temporary slope drains to be placed will be affected by the actual conditions which occur during the construction of the project.

The quantity of temporary slope drains may be increased, decreased, or eliminated entirely at the direction of the Engineer. Such variations in quantity will not be considered as alterations in the details of construction or a change in the character of the work.

1622-2 MATERIALS.

Temporary slope drains shall be constructed with pipe of sufficient size to carry the anticipated volume of water, but in no case no less than 12 inches in diameter.

1622-3 CONSTRUCTION METHODS.

(A) Temporary Slope Drains:

Temporary slope drains shall be installed as part of the grading operation where applicable, and adjusted as directed by the Engineer.

An earth berm at the top of cut and fill sections shall be constructed to channel the water into the slope drain and to prevent collected water from spilling over the edge of the slope.

At locations of single direction waterflow, the temporary slope drain shall be located in a sump by constructing an earth berm ditch block perpendicular to the direction of the waterflow on the downstream side of the temporary slope drain. The ditch block shall be of sufficient height to block the flow of water but shall not be constructed at an equal to or higher elevation than the earth shoulder berm.

If multiple pipe sections are joined together, they shall be joined using a pipe coupling approved by the Engineer.

Temporary slope drains may be removed or left in place, as directed by the Engineer. If removed, they will become the property of the Contractor and may be used again at the other temporary locations providing they are in a condition acceptable to the Engineer. Upon removal, the Contractor shall dress the area to give a pleasing appearance, and shall then seed and mulch the area in accordance with Section 1660.

(B) Inlet Protection at Temporary Slope Drain:

When directed by the Engineer, the inlet shall be protected by placement of a tee section and compacted earth material or by lining the inlet area with Class B stone or bituminous plant mix at the inlet in accordance with the details in the plans.

The plant mix shall meet the requirements of Section 645 for Type I1, I2 or HDS, except as otherwise provided herein. The plant mix shall meet the requirements of any job mix formula for Type I1, I2 or HDS which has been issued by the Division of Highways for a project currently under contract.

The asphalt plant mix shall be produced, transported to the, project, and placed in accordance with the applicable requirements of Section 610, except as otherwise provided herein.

A prime coat or tack coat will not be required.

Pavers will not be required for spreading and finishing.

The rolling equipment and rolling sequences required by Article 61010 shall not apply. The mix shall be compacted to a degree acceptable to the Engineer.

1622-4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The quantity of temporary slope drain to be paid for will be the actual number of linear feet of drain pipe including funnels, measured along the invert of the drain, which has been completed and accepted.

The quantity of inlet protection to be paid for will be the actual number of inlet protection which have been acceptably constructed at locations directed by the Engineer.

1622-5 BASIS OF PAYMENT.

The quantity of temporary slope drains, measured as provided in Article 16224, will be paid for at the contract price per linear foot for "Temporary Slope Drains."

The quantity of inlet protection at temporary slope drains, measured as provided in Article 16224, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for " Inlet protection at Temporary Slope Drain."

As an exception to the above, no payment will be made for temporary slope drains or inlet protection which have been required due to the Contractor's negligence, carelessness, or failure to install permanent controls as a part of the work scheduled.

The items of "Temporary Slope Drains" and " Inlet Protection at Temporary Slope Drain" will be considered to be minor items. However, the provisions of Article 1045 pertaining to revised contract unit prices for overrunning minor items will not apply as no revision in the contract unit prices for "Temporary Slope Drains" or "Paved Berm at Temporary Slope Drain" will be made as a result of any overrun regardless of the quantities of these items actually performed.

The above prices and payments will be full compensation for all work covered by this section, including but not limited to furnishing all pipe, tees and compacted earth, elbows; installation and removal of the slope drain; furnishing and installation of asphalt and stone; constructing the sump, earth shoulder berm and earth berm ditch block;, and dressing, seeding, and mulching the disturbed area after the slope drain and berm have been removed.

Payment will be made under:
