SECTION 1407

ELECTRIC SERVICE POLE AND LATERAL

1407-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of furnishing and installing wood service poles, and an electric service lateral from the service point to a control system.

1407-2 MATERIALS.

The service pole shall be Southern Yellow Pine, Class 4, and shall be 30 feet in length. The pole shall conform to ANSI Standard 05.1. Poles shall be treated with pentachlorophenol or chromated copper arsenate preservative. Treatment shall be by the pressure process in accordance with AWPA C4 "Poles-Preservative Treatment by Pressure Processes". The retention of preservative shall not be less than 6.6 lb. of dry chemical by assay per cubic foot of wood.

The service lateral shall be stranded copper Type USE conductors installed in rigid galvanized steel conduit sized as shown on the plans.

1407-3 CONSTRUCTION METHODS.

Holes shall be dug large enough to permit the proper use of tampers to the full depth of the hole. Backfill shall be placed in the hole in 6 inch maximum layers and thoroughly tamped. Surplus earth shall be placed around the pole in a conical shape and packed tightly to drain water away.

The pole setting depth shall be 5'6" minimum unless shown otherwise on the plans.

Connections at the service head shall be at the bottom of the drip loop to prevent siphoning of water through the cable.

The Contractor shall provide for a meter in accordance with the requirements of the utility company's condition of service.

A meter base for a self-contained meter may be mounted on the service pole or back of the control enclosure as indicated on the plans. A current transformer (CT) cabinet and meter base may be mounted in either location if requested by the utility company.

If the utility company provides a pad mount transformer or allows attachment of the riser and weatherhead to their pole, then any proposed service pole will be deleted from the contract.

1407-4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT.

The quantity of service poles to be paid for will be the actual number of service poles which have been installed and accepted.

The quantity of service poles, measured as provided above, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Electric Service Poles _____" of the appropriate length and class. Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work of furnishing and setting the pole.

The quantity of service lateral from service pole to control panel to be paid for will be the actual number of linear feet of service lateral which has been installed and accepted. Measurement will be along the longest conductor from electrical terminal to electrical terminal.

The quantity of service lateral from service pole to control panel, measured as provided above, will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for "Electric Service Lateral _____" of the appropriate size and type. Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work of furnishing and installing the wire, conduit, bushings, fittings, connectors, meter base, and weatherhead.
