SECTION 1253

SNOWPLOWABLE RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS

1253-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of furnishing, installing and maintaining snowplowable raised pavement markers in accordance with the plans and specifications.

1253-2 MATERIALS.

The provisions of Article 1250­2 shall be applicable to the work covered by this section.

All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:

1253-3 CONSTRUCTION METHODS.

The provisions of Article 1250­3 will be applicable to the work covered by this section.

(A) General:

Marker castings shall be bonded to the pavement with epoxy adhesive. Epoxy adhesives shall be installed as required by the manufacturer's specifications. The markers shall be placed immediately after the adhesive has been mixed and dispensed.

Snowplowable pavement marker castings shall be installed into slots saw-cut into the pavement. All debris resulting from the saw cutting operation shall be promptly removed from the pavement surface by the Contractor. The marker castings shall be installed within 7 calendar days after saw cutting slots in the pavement. The slots shall be brushed or blown clean of loose material and shall be dry prior to applying the epoxy adhesive. The cleaned slots shall be totally filled with epoxy adhesive flush with the surface of the existing pavement. The keels of the pavement marker casting shall be hand placed into the slots in such a manner as to assure that the tips of the marker's snowplow deflecting surfaces are below the pavement surface. The 4 lugs on the keels of the raised snowplowable pavement marker casting shall be in contact with the pavement surface.

(B) Reflector Replacement:

In the event that a reflector is damaged, the Contractor shall replace the damaged reflector by using adhesives and methods recommended by the manufacturer of the markers and approved by the Engineer. This work is considered incidental to the installation and maintenance of snowplowable markers specified in this section.

1253-4 MAINTENANCE.

The Contractor shall be responsible for maintenance of the snowplowable raised pavement markers prior to acceptance.

1253-5 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The quantity of snowplowable pavement markers to be paid for will be the actual number of pavement markers which have been satisfactorily installed and accepted by the Engineer.

1253-6 BASIS OF PAYMENT.

The quantity of snowplowable raised pavement markers, measured as provided in Article 1253­5, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Snowplowable Raised Pavement Markers (color)". Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work covered by this section, including but not limited to furnishing, installing and maintaining snowplowable raised pavement markers.
