SECTION 1160

TEMPORARY CRASH CUSHIONS

1160-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of furnishing, installing, maintaining, resetting, and removing temporary crash cushions and repair packages in accordance with the plans and specifications. (See Standard Special Provisions)

1160-2 MATERIALS.

All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:

1160-3 CONSTRUCTION METHODS.

(A) General:

The provisions of Article 1105­3 will be applicable to the work covered by this section.

The Contractor shall install temporary crash cushions in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

All temporary crash cushions shall have a yellow reflective end treatment to delineate the approach end of the crash cushion to oncoming traffic.

The crash cushions shall be reset as shown in the plans or directed by the Engineer.

Each temporary crash cushion shall be removed from the project as directed by the Engineer.

The Contractor shall repair any pavement damaged by the installation or removal of a crash cushion.

(B) Repair Packages: (See Standard Special Provisions)

The number of temporary crash cushion repair packages required by the plans shall be stockpiled for use on the project at all times when a temporary crash cushion is in use, and available prior to installation of any crash cushions on the project. The stockpile area shall be on the project or at a location near the project, approved by the Engineer. Each repair package shall have a sufficient assortment of nuts, bolts, and spare hardware to fully repair a unit after one head-on impact.

1160-4 MAINTENANCE.

All maintenance shall meet the requirements of Article 1105­4. Any crash cushion that becomes crushed or otherwise damaged so that it will not perform its intended purpose shall be immediately repaired or replaced by the Contractor within 24 hours after the damage occurs or the Engineer may suspend all construction activities until the temporary crash cushion is repaired or replaced. The Contractor shall furnish adequate means, acceptable to the Engineer, to provide safe control of traffic until the crash cushion has been repaired.

1160-5 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The quantity of temporary crash cushions to be paid for will be the actual number of crash cushions which have been furnished, installed and accepted by the Engineer.

The quantity of temporary crash cushion repair packages to be paid for will be the actual number of repair packages which have been used for repair of a crash cushion, during the life of the project. (See Standard Special Provisions)

The quantity of reset temporary crash cushions to be paid for will be the actual number of crash cushion relocations as directed by the Engineer.

1160-6 BASIS OF PAYMENT.

The quantity of temporary crash cushions, measured as provided in Article 1160­5, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Temporary Crash Cushions".

The quantity of temporary crash cushion repair packages, measured as provided in Article 1160­5, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Temporary Crash Cushion Repair Packages". (See Standard Special Provisions)

The quantity of reset temporary crash cushions, measured as provided in Article 1160­5, will be paid for at the contract unit price each for "Reset Temporary Crash Cushions".

Such prices and payments will be full compensation for all work covered by this section, including but not limited to furnishing, installing, maintaining, resetting, and removing the temporary crash cushion; and furnishing, installing, stockpiling, and removing all repair packages.
