SECTION 1028

JOINT MATERIALS

1028-1 JOINT FILLER.

Joint filler shall be a nonbituminous type meeting the requirements of AASHTO M153 for Type I, II, or III; or shall be a bituminous type meeting the requirements of AASHTO M213. A manufacturer's Type 3 Certification shall be furnished with each lot of the joint material furnished to each project.

1028-2 RUBBER ASPHALT JOINT SEALER.

Joint sealer shall be hot-poured rubber asphalt conforming to ASTM D3405.

A Type 1 Manufacturer's Certification shall be furnished for each lot of the joint sealer material furnished to each project.

1028-3 PREFORMED NEOPRENE JOINT SEAL.

Preformed neoprene joint seal shall meet the requirements of AASHTO M220.

1028-4 LOW MODULUS SILICONE SEALANT.

Low modulus silicone sealant shall be a one component silicone formulation. A primer for bonding the sealant to concrete shall be used when required in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Acid cure sealants are not acceptable for use on Portland cement concrete. Bond breakers shall meet the requirements of Article 10285.

(A) Silicone Sealant Types:

Type A - A low modulus non-sag silicone for use in sealing horizontal and vertical joints on Portland cement concrete pavements and bridges. Tooling is required.

Type B - A very low modulus self-leveling silicone used to seal horizontal joints in Portland cement concrete pavements and bridges. Tooling is not normally required.

Type C - An ultra low modulus self-leveling silicone to seal horizontal joints in Portland cement concrete pavements and bridges. It can also be used to seal the joints between Portland cement concrete pavement and asphaltic concrete shoulders. Tooling is not normally required.

(B) The sealant shall meet the following requirements:

A Type 3 Manufacturer's Certification shall be furnished for each lot of joint sealer material furnished to each project. Each lot of sealant shall be delivered in containers plainly marked with the manufacturer's name or trade mark, lot number, and date of manufacture.

1028-5 BOND BREAKER.

Silicone sealant shall be installed over a bond breaker to prevent the sealant from bonding to the bottom of the joint. Bond breakers shall be chemically inert and resistant to oils, gasoline, solvents, and primer, if required. The bond breaker shall not stain or adhere to the sealant. Bond breakers shall be either a backer rod or tape identified and used in accordance with the following:

Type L - A closed-cell expanded polyethylene foam backer road. This backer rod shall be used with Type A silicone only and is suitable for roadway and bridge joints.

Type M - A closed-cell polyolefin foam backer rod which has a closed-cell skin over an open-cell core. The backer rod may be used with all three types of silicone and is suitable for use in roadway and bridge joints.

Both types of backer rod shall meet the following requirements:

Density (ASTM D-1622) 2.0 lbs./cu.ft. minimum

Tensile Strength (ASTM D-1623) 25 PSI Minimum

Water absorption (ASTM C-509) 0.5% by Volume Maximum

Type N - Bond breaking tape shall be made from extruded polyethylene and shall have a pressure sensitive adhesive on one side. Bond breaking tapes may be used with all three types of silicone but is suitable for bridge joints only.

Bond breaking tapes shall be a minimum of .005" in thickness.

A Type 3 Manufacturer's Certifications shall be furnished for each lot of bond breaker material furnished to each project.
