Description: B-3302 - ASHE COUNTY LOCATION: Culvert over Grassy Creek
Item(s) of Interest: 3-sided culvert, context sensitive solution. The original design called for a cored slab structure. There was a high level of community involvement that requested consideration of a context sensitive solution. The result was a 3-sided culvert with faux stone facing (created by decorative form-lined concrete), that has been received positively by the local community, agencies and DOT leadership.
Observations and Points of Discussion:
Successful context sensitive project.
Weathering steel guardrail used on approaches and the 3-sided culvert.
However, the Department would like to move away from using weathering steel guardrail, which does not allow for very tight lap joints. Painted galvanized steel guardrail is preferred.
