| MEMORANDUM TO: | Project Engineers |

| FROM: | W. J. Rogers, P.E. |
| State Bridge Design Engineer | |
| DATE: | October 1, 1998 |
| SUBJECT: | PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDERS |
If a stream crossing structure is located in the area of the state deemed corrosive (Figure 13-9 of the Design Manual) and contains any girders within 4.5 m (15 ft.) above mean high tide, all girders of that structure shall be designed for zero tension in the precompressed tensile zone. In addition, all girders of that structure shall contain calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitor
This policy is effective for new projects and projects where it is practical to make the necessary changes.
Effective with the January 1999 letting, for prestressed concrete girders designed with zero tension, place the following note on girder details sheet: "Prestressed concrete girders are designed for 0 Mpa (0 Psi) tension in the precompressed tensile zone under all loading conditions."
The Design Manual will be revised accordingly at a later date.
