| SUBJECT: | SPIRAL REINFORCING STEEL |
As per industry request, in order to facilitate the bidding process, the size of spiral reinforcing steel for columns and drilled piers shall be noted on the plans in the following manner:
*** The ______ spiral reinforcing steel shall be W20 or D-20 cold drawn wire or #13 (#4) plain or deformed bar.
and/or
*** The ______ spiral reinforcing steel shall be W31 or D-31 cold drawn wire or #16 (#5) plain or deformed bar.
Use one or both of the above notes, as applicable, and complete the notes with the appropriate SP1, SP2, etc. designation. Place the note(s) directly below or near the bill of material for each bent. Place a double asterisk (**) in the "size" column for spiral reinforcing steel in the bill of material.
Continue to place a single asterisk (*) before the SP1, SP2 designation in the bill of material when epoxy coated spiral reinforcing steel is required by the Design Manual.
This policy is effective with the December 1999 letting. The Design Manual, Project Special Provisions, and standard note directory will be revised at a later date.
