| SUBJECT: | BRIDGE APPROACH SLAB STANDARDS |
The bridge approach slab standard drawings BAS1 through BAS4 and BAS1SM through BAS4SM have been revised in the following manner.
At the request of the Soils and Foundation Unit, the limit of the reinforced approach fill has been extended to below the bottom of the cap. In addition, the diameter of the drainage pipe has been modified to 102 mm in the metric standard drawings.
The 1'-4" (400 mm) of temporary A.B.C. at the end of all approach slabs has been deleted. Instead, the base material now extends, at an even 6" (150 mm) depth, to 10'-0" (3 m) beyond the end of the approach slab. Notes associated with this change have been modified. At the request of the Construction Unit, a note has been revised to clarify that the concrete base options also extend 10'-0" (3 m) beyond the approach slab.
At the request of the Construction Unit, an alternative "Section L-L/ Section Thru Curb" detail has been added to the Bridge Approach Slab for Flexible Pavement standard drawings. This detail shall be used when special drainage is specified and the limit of the asphalt pavement shall match the proposed roadway section. Delete the alternate detail that does not apply.
The detail showing the curb elevation has been changed to reflect a beveled end of the approach slab.
This policy is effective with the August 1999 letting. The revised standard drawings are available on both the SDD1 directories and Structure Design Homepage. The Design Manual will be revised at a later date.
