MEMORANDUM TO: Project Engineers
Project Design Engineers
FROM: W. J. Rogers, P.E.
State Bridge Design Engineer
DATE:January 22, 1999
SUBJECT:ASSIGNMENT OF BRIDGE NUMBERS

At the request of the Bridge Maitenance Unit, a bridge number shall be included on all bridge or major culvert plans. A major culvert is defined as one with a total interior opening of 20ft. (6m) or greater as measured along the centerline of roadway. This number shall be located immediately above the title block of the general drawing and designated as follows:

For bridge replacement projects, current policy remains intact. The number of the existing bridge shall be maintained and reported on the general drawing as:

.....Replaces Bridge No. _____________

On new alignments or for a bridge that replaces a culvert, a bridge number will be assigned by the Bridge Maintenance Unit and reported on the general drawing as:

.....Bridge No. _____________

In those cases where dual structures replaces a single structure, at least one new bridge number will be assigned by the Bridge Maintenance Unit.

Attached is a form letter to be used to request the assignment of the bridge number. The description in this letter should include the intersection features of the bridge. For those projects with multiple bridges, a project sketch such as that included in the Structure Recommendations, or a comparable location sketch, shall be attached to the request form letter. The Project Engineer is responsible for obtaining these bridge numbers as early in the design process as possible. These bridge numbers shall then be clearly indicated on all design folders.

This policy is effective with the May, 1999 letting. The Design Manual and Policy and Procedure Manual will be revised at a later date.
