MEMORANDUM TO: Project Engineers
Project Design Engineers
FROM: T. V. Rountree, P. E.
State Bridge Design Engineer
DATE: January 19,2000
SUBJECT: CAUSEWAY RIPRAP

In the event that a causeway is required on the plans, the Contractor shall be afforded the opportunity to recycle the causeway riprap, or a portion thereof, by subsequently placing as riprap slope protection. By request of the contractors of the AGC-DOT Joint Bridge Design Subcommittee, the following note shall be placed on the General Drawing:

At the Contractor's option, and upon removal of the causeway, the Class II riprap used in the causeway may be placed as riprap slope protection. See Special Provisions for Temporary Rock Causeway.

Include the following paragraph in the Project Special Provision for Temporary Rock Causeway:

Class II riprap used in the causeway may be recycled for placement in the final riprap slope protection as directed by the Engineer. No payment will be made for recycled riprap as this material is considered incidental to the causeway placement and removal. If this option is exercised, no adjustment in contract bid price will be allowed due to an underrun in the quantity of "Plain Rip Rap Class II (2'-0" Thick)" ("Plain Rip Rap Class II (600 mm Thick").

This policy is effective with the May 2000 letting. The Design Manual will be revised at a later date.
