Modeling Concrete Retaining Wall

Introduction:

There are several type of retaining and noise walls the Geotechnical Unit can proposed. The Roadway Corridor Modeling aspect has two benefits.

  • The top and bottom wall envelope profiles can be used to design the wall dimension.
  • Visual inspection of the wall structure and location in proximity of key area of concern before it is built.

Wall components are included in the Standard Template Library. However it is not part of the pre-built standard template. The user has to customized the roadway template to include the wall components into their templates.

Objective:

Model proposed concrete retaining wall with SBG on the left side from station 13+00 to 16+83.63.

Download dataset here... 6_ConcWall.zip (1,523 KB)

  • NOTE: The content of the ZIP dataset file must be extracted to the root C:\ directory. Each chapter is then automatically expanded to the "C:\NCDOT Training\Roadway\CM" folder. This folder structure must be maintain to insure all saved ITL, DTM, and RDP paths are set accordingly.

Exercise

Step 1.
While in the file b4657_rdy_cmd.dgn, launch the Geopak Corridor Modeling tool.

Step 2.
Load the file b4657.rdp preference file.

Step 3.
Load the jobrdy.gpk file.

Step 4.
Launch Roadway Designer.

Step 5.
In Roadway Designer, load the b4657.ird file.

  • NOTE: Verifying the template drops.

Step 6.
In the Template Drops dialog box, verify the template drops station ranges. Note the retaining wall is on the left side from station 13+00 to 16+83.63. Close out of the Template Drops dialog box.

Action: Close

Step 7.
In the Roadway Designer click on Process All and Save the IRD.

Step 8.
Check the in the following settings in the Create Surface dialog box. Apply and Close out of the Create Surface dialog box. Close out of Roadway Designer.

New Surface for Each Corridor: (checked)
Empty Design Surface: (checked)
Add Transverse Features: (unchecked)
Add Exterior Boundary: (unchecked)
Features: (checked)
Components: (checked)

Action: Apply then Close

  • NOTE: Verifying the 3D Model

Step 9.
Verify the wall and SBG are displayed correctly in the 3D model (DGN).

Step 10.
Close out of the file B4657_Rdy_cmd.dgn and launch the file B4657_Rdy_XSC.dgn.

  • NOTE: Verifying the Wall Cross Sections

Step 11.
Open the Geopak Draw Cross Sections from Surfaces dialog box. Enter the following settings for the XS Cells tab.

Job Number: RDY
Chain: L
Pattern: By Station
Begin Station: 10+50
End Station: 23+75
Even: 50
Left Offset: 75
Right Offset: 75

Step 12.
Enter the following settings for the Surfaces tab.

DTM File: b4657_rdy_080905.dtm
Method: Triangle
Type: Line
ByLevel Symbology: Exist CMT Ground Line

Action: Add

DTM File: L with Left Wall.dtm

Action: Add

Action: Draw

Step 13.
Verify the retaining wall is generated correctly in the cross sections from station 13+00 to 16+50
