Roadway Design Question and Answer Forum

Criteria

Question:
I have a project with a median barrier. Criteria is holding the proposed roadway cross slope and tying this slope into the median barrier in lieu of utilizing the 0.04 slope that is required. What are my options if I want Criteria to process the standard rollover rates at the inside paved shoulder section?

Roadway Standard Drawings 560.02

Answer:
The median barrier Criteria (mdnbw01.cri) can be processed with or without a shoulder Criteria (shld01.cri). If only the template Criteria (tmplt01.cri) and the median barrier Criteria are included in the input, then the super of the mainline is extended to the inside paved shoulder section.

If a shoulder Criteria is inserted between the template and the median barrier Criteria, then the standard rollover is applied

Since the width of paved shoulders can vary depending on the placement of the median barrier, a non-standard shoulder width (considerably less than half of the median width) and an override shoulder case statement MUST be included in the input for Criteria to process this correctly.

For example;

Note the overriding "SHO# STANDARD CASE NUMBER" statement should always be set to "6" (standard rollover for full depth paved shoulder >= 10'). When a non-standard shoulder width (with the same paved shoulder width) is encountered by Criteria, the shoulder case override statement forces the handling of rollover rates to the same standards as if the shoulder width and paved shoulder width are greater than 10'. In the example above, Criteria will draw both the 2.5' paved shoulder section and the remaining paved section to the toe of the barrier on the same slope, standard rollover applied. A complete list of inside shoulder rollover rates at a 6% lock, as processed by Criteria, is depicted below.
