The Triangle Regional Transportation Management Center( TRTMC) project started when the World Special Olympics were held in the
Raleigh area in the summer of 1999. NCDOT was responsible for providing an efficient transportation system that could handle the event
traffic as well as the daily commuter traffic. With less than a year to complete the project, NCDOT met the challenge under strict time
constraints. The department installed 11 CCTV units, 8 Dynamic Message Signs, a trunk fiber system on I-40, and a hub connection
to the NC State Highway Patrol Communications Center. Construction began in January 1999, and the system was successfully
implemented by May 1999.
Due to time constraints, engineers established a temporary control center on Wade Ave. in Raleigh.
In September 2000, just fifteen months after the initial TRTMC opened, the temporary facility converted to a communications hub, and
the new Regional TMC opened its doors on Trenton Road in Raleigh. Presently, the TRTMC is the operational hub for the 5th Division
ITS/Incident Management Program, which oversees 75 miles of freeway through Incident Management Patrols (IMAP).
The center also
operates 48 CCTV units, 15 DMS signs, 3 permanent Highway Advisory Radio locations and a Reversible Lane System. In addition, the
TRTMC shares video and network connections with various traffic management organizations in the area. The current facility is staffed
and operated Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., while NCDOT plans to have the TRTMC operating 24 hrs./day by 2008.
