FHWA's Excellence in Highway Design Awards
FHWA's Excellence in Highway Design Awards recognizes outstanding examples of highways and related facilities. This competition between states reflects favorably on our highways and related improvement projects completed in North Carolina since January 1, 2000. The winners of last year's contest were announced on September 18, 2004, at the annual AASHTO meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

- HONORABLE MENTION: I-26 Buncombe-Madison Counties (A-10) in Rural Highways
- HONORABLE MENTION: US 64-264 Virginia Dare Bridge over Croatan Sound, Dare County (R-2551) in Major Highway Structures
