The Materials Operations Section of the Materials and Tests Unit is comprised of two distinctive areas. The Field Operations area, and the Research and Investigations area.

Field Operations is responsible for sampling and testing the various materials used in the construction and maintenance of our highway system. In order to accomplish this tremendous task, this section is divided into eight (8) geographical areas across the state. Each section is comprised of a Section Materials Specialist, one or two Section Concrete Technician(s), and various Section Materials Inspectors.

Each section has the responsibility of inspecting materials produced at all the quarries, sand pits, ready-mixed concrete plants, corrugated metal pipe plants, corrugated plastic pipe plants, concrete pipe plants, precast concrete plants, seed companies, and other specialty plants and manufacturers in their area. Additionally, these inspectors travel to various production facilities throughout the eastern and mid-western United States.
