NCDOT's Anti Litter Efforts

"Yes! Yes! We Can Stop Littering"

Campaign.

The Union County Rotary Clubs - Marshville, Monroe Lunch, Monroe-Union Breakfast and Union West have formed an alliance with the Union County Public School System, county charter and private schools, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to prevent littering. The purpose of the alliance is to design and implement a program over the next five years to effect a cultural change to stop littering in Union County and the state.

The Rotary Clubs, with a membership of 200 Union County leaders, meet weekly to provide humanitarian service, to encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to help build goodwill and peace in our community. These organizations are nonpolitical, non-religious and are open to all cultures, races and creeds.

The clubs belong to a larger network, Rotary International. With 1.2 Million members belonging to 30,000 Rotary Clubs in 160 countries worldwide, Rotary International has a vision to create a better world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address critical issues in our society such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, violence, illiteracy and the environment. The Rotary motto is "Service above Self."

It was out of this vision and the commitment of Union Club Rotary Clubs to community service, that this comprehensive litter prevention program was created.

Program Objectives.

First, over the next five years the "Yes! Yes! We Can Stop Littering" program is designed to effect a cultural change to stop littering statewide. This will be accomplished by 1) promoting awareness, 2) changing attitudes through increased pride in clean environment and 3) creating positive action by our citizens to prevent littering and the polluting of our environment.

Second, provide a worthwhile community cause to motivate and inspire the spirit of cooperation and community among the four Rotary Clubs, public, charter and private schools of Union County, local businesses, corporations, private individuals, elected officials and civic leaders.

The third objective is to educate our children, the future of North Carolina, and their parents or guardians to take pride in being a good custodian of our environment.
