"War Materials Advantageous in North Carolina Highway Construction and Maintenance"
Following World War I, the NC Highway Commission received an estimated $3 million worth of surplus equipment, donated by the US Department of Agriculture.   Included were around 500 trucks, 100 touring cars, tons of repair parts for them, and hand tools such as picks, axes and shovels.   These units were refurbished and modified slightly to create mobile housing and dining facilities for eight man work gangs building and maintaining North Carolina's roads and bridges.   Pulled by an Army "Standard B, Heavy Cargo Truck", (a 3-ton Packard), were a sleeping car or "Pullman", a kitchen/dining car, and a tool wagon.
