Prequalification of Prime Contractors (Bidders) is required in order to place bids on Central Let contracts (projects that are statewide and let out of Raleigh). Once prequalified, firms must renew their status annually and requalify every three (3) years. The purpose of the annual renewal is to make sure the Department has a current address, Safety Index, and Non-Collusion Affidavit and Debarment Certification on file. During requalification, the Department will again ask for examples of work experience and an equipment list to support desired work codes.

All applications for prequalification (1st time, renewal, and requalification) must be completed online. In order to complete the application online, please read the instructions at the Instructions for Web Application link below prior to applying.

A firm’s bonding capacity will determine the size of contract on which it may bid. Firms that are approved as Prequalified Bidders may also bid on most Division Let contracts and perform work on Department projects as subcontractors, whether they are let Centrally or by a Division. Once your firm is approved, it will show up in the Department's Directory of Transportation Firms with a Pre-Qualification Status of “Prequalified Bidder". The Directory of Transportation Firms can be accessed by clicking on Contractor Directory under Navigation to the left.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the Department will no longer accept paper applications for Prime Contractors (Bidders). All firms wishing to submit an application (1st time, renewal or requalification) must submit their application through the Online Prequalification System at the link above.
