The Bicycle and Pedestrian Division works with other state agencies and national organizations to develop and implement effective safety and education programs. The following programs work to educate and promote safety for bicyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
Safe Routes to School Program
Watch For Me NC
Watch For Me NC is a comprehensive statewide safety and awareness campaign geared toward bicycle and pedestrian safety, education and enforcement.
Combining multimedia with public engagement, Watch For Me NC promotes safety messages at local events, followed by targeted enforcement in areas with heightened risk of crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians. A key component of the program includes the training of law enforcement officers on existing laws and how to enforce them. Learn how some communities have participated as part of the Watch for Me NC program.
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Division are committed to encouraging the use of bicycle helmets as an essential means of reducing bicyclist injuries and fatalities. Communities conducting bicycle safety events for underprivileged children can request helmets through the Bicycle Helmet Initiative, funded from the proceeds from "Share the Road" specialty license plates
Bicycle and pedestrian safety is a concern not only for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Division but also for other agencies at the state, federal and local levels. Below is a list with links to other helpful agencies and resources.
